SCR198: How does one movie cram together genuine horror, Abbott-and-Costello slapstick, and straight-faced pulp action without falling apart? That tonal tightrope is exactly why The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001) still hold up — and why Brendan Fraser is suiting up for a fourth film in 2027.

Ahead of that return, Jeff Haecker, Rob Leonardi, and Robert Story revisit both movies and try to pin down what makes them tick. A big part of the answer is Rick O’Connell, Fraser’s dual-revolver, John-Wayne-swagger adventurer who is all brawn but never dumb. Another is Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), the librarian who is genuinely proud of who she is and grows from bookish intellectual into adventurer and mother across the two films.

Then there’s Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) — a villain who menaces with barely a dozen lines — plus the franchise’s notorious Scorpion King CGI, reportedly rushed out in roughly eight days for The Rock’s breakout role. The crew also sorts out a few details fans love to argue about, from who Anck-su-namun really was to why a marriage at the center of an action movie feels so refreshingly healthy.

With the fourth Mummy movie set for October 2027 and Fraser, Weisz, and Hannah confirmed to return, the conversation lands on one simple hope: keep it fun. No grim reboot, no self-deprecating wink every twenty seconds — just heroes, adventure, and a mummy worth running from.
