SSG275: The Wraith don’t have families. They have facilities.

Stargate Atlantis Season 4’s “Spoils of War” — Episode 12 — is the one that finally answers a question four seasons in the making: how do the Wraith reproduce, and how did a species that appears to do nothing but eat manage to overrun the Ancients? The answer is a top-secret outpost full of pods, a stolen stack of ZPMs, and a birthing sequence Rodney McKay is entirely right to have nightmares about.

Jeff Haecker, Lisa Jones, and Victor Lams pick up where the mid-season two-parter left off — literally, since the teaser rewinds past the end of the previous episode to catch Todd’s darts collecting ZPMs during the battle over the Asuran homeworld.

The conversation keeps circling three things. First, the Wraith cloning facility. It’s the first real piece of Wraith backstory the show has offered, it explains the outcome of the Ancient-Wraith war, and it raises an obvious question the episode never asks: if you can grow drones by the thousand, why not grow dinner?

Second, Teyla. Rachel Luttrell’s pregnancy is written into the season rather than hidden, and this is the episode that resolves it. Her Wraith abilities are stronger than they have ever been — she flies a hive ship almost effortlessly, and takes a Wraith queen’s mind outright — because, as the queen tells her, there are two minds in there now. Then she walks away from field work, on her own terms, because the queen got close enough to threaten her child. It’s a better landing than simply grounding her, though the “you were right” framing tells you something about who wrote it.

Third, Todd. Four seasons of an unnamed Wraith with more screen time than any other, and Sheppard finally names him here, deadpan, after a guy he knew in college. The panel loses count of how many times these two have saved each other and concludes they may simply be friends by now — though Todd never learns his name.

There’s a good stretch of production history too: one standing Wraith set doing double duty as hive ship and laboratory, an actor who spent hours inside a birthing pod having slime poured on him, an exercise-bike scene written and shot late because the episode came in short, and the tangled story of how Major Lorne got a first name — a script that called him Wes, a frantic search back through old scripts, an interview with the actor that settled it as Evan, and then the line getting cut anyway.

Plus: Andee Frizzell back as a redesigned Wraith queen, foreign-language titles that each read the episode differently, listener comments on “Tabula Rasa,” and a serious question about whether anyone would genuinely prefer a person to a steak.
