SSG283: Ba’al doesn’t need an army to beat SG-1. He needs one freighter in 1939. Kill the crew of the Achilles, keep the Stargate from ever reaching America, and the team that fought him for a decade never exists.
That’s the setup of Stargate: Continuum, the 2008 direct-to-DVD film written by Brad Wright and directed by Martin Wood, and the last time SG-1 shares the screen. Victor Lams, Lisa Jones and Jeff Haecker take it apart, from Martin Wood’s opening one-take through the SGC to the photo in Mitchell’s locker.
Lisa calls it a gift to fans: the wrap-up that The Ark of Truth and seasons 9 and 10 should have been, with no Ori in sight. Jeff loves it too, with one complaint. Claudia Black spends almost the whole film as Qetesh, so Vala, the character who came the furthest, never gets a real goodbye.
Then there’s Ba’al’s plan. Why would a Goa’uld who enjoyed life as an Earth billionaire wait 70 years, recruit Apophis, Cronus, Camulus and the rest, and then try to win Earth by charm? The panel isn’t sure the movie knows either, and they argue about whether the time-travel rules hold up when Teal’c and the Tok’ra vanish one at a time.
The best story might be the one behind the camera. The cast flew to the Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station, a U.S. Navy camp on the Arctic ice north of Alaska, and filmed USS Alexandria surfacing through the ice. Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Ben Browder lived in plywood huts in brutal Arctic cold, and the shoot earned a Guinness record as the farthest-north film shoot. Michael Shanks had a scheduling conflict, which is why Daniel’s leg freezes in the Achilles’ hold.
The panel also covers Don S. Davis’ last scenes as Hammond, Alison Matthews’ return as Carter’s interviewer, Peter Williams’ final Apophis, why the movie looks so dark, Joel Goldsmith’s score, and Brad Wright’s recent post about the Stargate pilot he wrote after Travelers, set several years after Continuum.
Is this how SG-1 should have ended?
