SSG264: The three-part season-four opener for Stargate Atlantis reaches its conclusion in “Lifeline” (S4E2), and the price of getting out is Dr. Elizabeth Weir.
The mission looked contained: use Weir’s nanite connection to navigate the Asuran city, grab the ZPM Atlantis needs, and go. Then McKay finds a buried base code that can redirect the entire Asuran fleet against the Wraith, and the team decides to push deeper. That choice, and McKay’s already-impossible task list, are what Lisa Jones, Jeff Haecker, and Victor Lams keep returning to. Fix the jumper’s hyperdrive, convert the cloak into an anti-replicator field, find the code, write the upload, interface the ZPM back into the drive. Lams makes the point plainly: the real reason Carter had to transfer to Atlantis was that Rodney needed relief.
The centerpiece is Weir’s confrontation with Oberoth (played by David Ogden Stiers). She reverses the replicator mind-meld against him, freezes the Asuran army, and feeds Oberoth a false vision of a team already captured, buying Sheppardand Ronon the minutes they need to upload the code and get out. The episode earns the emotional weight of her exit. She doesn’t make it back to the jumper.
The episode is also a quiet transition. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) arrives with the Apollo but deliberately stays in the background: at consoles, off to the side, never addressing the room. The producers wanted to respect Torri Higginson’s final episode before any official handoff. Sheppard vows to find Weir regardless; Atlantis sets down on an ocean planet she never knew about.
Behind the scenes: Martin Wood is credited as director, but Andy Mikita directed most of the episode because Wood was filming Stargate: Continuum in the Arctic. The frozen-Asuran hallway used real mime artists. The computer-room freeze was a VFX composite shot from an overhead angle on the lighting catwalk — the set was the Atlantis gate room the whole time.
This is part three of three, following “First Strike” and “Adrift.”
