SSG284: Stargate Atlantis Season 5, Episode 1, “Search and Rescue,” picks up exactly where the cliffhanger left off: Sheppard and Ronon trapped under the rubble of Michael’s booby-trapped lab, McKay and Major Lorne pinned in another chamber, and Teyla still a prisoner aboard Michael’s cruiser with her baby due any day. Lisa Jones, Victor Lams, and Jeff Haecker dig into a season premiere that throws everything at the screen: a dream sequence with Aiden Ford, a two-story collapsed-building set, space battles, F-302s, a firefight in the Wraith hyperdrive room, and a birth.
The panel starts with the candlelit opening, where Teyla thanks Sheppard for a rescue he can’t remember and then turns into Ford, accusing him of never rescuing him either. Is the romantic setting a misstep with Teyla this pregnant and Kanaan in the picture, or a clear cue that the scene isn’t real? Either way, it plants the “we don’t leave people behind” thread that drives Sheppard back into the fight with a hole in his side.
Under the rubble, Ronon refuses to leave Sheppard, and a pop-culture test about Duff Beer and “Oprah Ale” exposes the rescuers as Michael’s hybrids. Back in Atlantis, Colonel Carter sends a rescue team that brings in new expedition member Captain Alicia Vega, a character whose role was cut back heavily in the final edit.
Then comes the scene everyone remembers: Teyla gives birth on a Wraith ship, with Rodney McKay as a very reluctant midwife, while Sheppard and Ronon blow up the hyperdrive. The panel talks about the production notes that shaped it, the decision to use a real newborn rather than an animatronic, and Sheppard flying the baby in the Dart cockpit instead of beaming him into Wraith storage. Teyla’s son gets his name, Torren John Emmagan, after her father and after Sheppard.
The ending divides the panel. If you’ve wondered why Carter left Stargate Atlantis, this is the scene: she goes back to Earth expecting a review and learns the IOA is replacing her with Richard Woolsey. Lisa thinks the episode gave Carter plenty to do; Jeff wishes the scene had hinted at a promotion instead of a dismissal. The panel also weighs the minute-long space pullback shot and the German, French and Japanese episode titles.
In the news segment, the panel reacts to word that WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer will develop a new Stargate series for Amazon MGM, and what a fresh start might mean for the franchise. Listener feedback covers Stargate Universe and a possible Instagram comment from Mitch Pileggi.
