The Siege (DS9)

SST415: A Bajoran coup, a fake siege, and a reluctant hero’s final act.
Dom Bettinelli, Jimmy Akin, and Fr. Jason Tyler close out DS9’s opening trilogy with “The Siege” — the episode that ends the Circle crisis and costs Bajor one of its most beloved figures.
The crew’s decision to stay raises a question the episode sidesteps. Sisko gives everyone permission to leave. Nobody does. Jimmy and Fr. Jason push back: in a scene where your commanding officer explicitly says he won’t blame you for going, the all-hands-stay result feels scripted rather than earned. Miles O’Brien’s choice to remain over Keiko’sobjections gets the sharpest scrutiny. What should have been a scene about duty and sacrifice comes across, on reflection, as a husband telling his wife she ranks below his captain. One extra exchange could have fixed it. Keiko’s anger, at least, makes the cut.
Not everything falls short. Quark and Rom’s evacuation seat scheme is pure DS9 at its best — right up until Rom grabs a Dabo girl and disappears, leaving Quark to drag his latinum across a hostile station alone.
The episode’s strongest material follows Kira and Dax. Two women alone with a broken ship, no men in the conversation. Dax channels memories from her Tobin host to get the Bajoran fighter airborne — the best use of the joined-Trill premise in the whole trilogy. Her fear of giant spiders, grounded in genuine Trill biology (insect bites can damage the symbiont-host bond), is a rare moment of real alien specificity.
Kai Winn’s read of the Chamber of Ministers scene is a clinic. She spots the tide shift before anyone else and turns on Jaro Essa without hesitation. Transparently self-serving. Completely riveting.
Li Nalas’s death closes a clean arc: reluctant hero, thrust into myth, finds his courage, gives his life to save Sisko. The creative dispute over killing him comes up — some wanted him kept for future stories. Dom, Jimmy, and Fr. Jason think the death earns its place. The problem: DS9 never mentions Li Nalas again. No invocation of the martyr. No ripple.
