Tabula Rasa (SGA)

SSG269: Everyone on Atlantis wakes up not knowing who they are — and a fading memory is only the first symptom of something that will kill them all. That’s the hook of “Tabula Rasa,” the sixth episode of Stargate Atlantis Season 4, and it opens right in the deep end: McKay strapped to his own desk, playing back a recording he left himself, chasing a single instruction — find Teyla.
Victor Lams, Jeff Haecker, and Lisa Jones work through an episode that could have been a tired amnesia story and instead becomes one of the season’s most inventive hours. The trick, as the panel lays out, is that the memory-loss virus hits everyone, turning the whole city into a race against time told out of order — a structure with a strong dose of Memento in its DNA, right down to McKay scrawling reminders across his arms. (David Hewlett improvised the messages himself.)
The conversation digs into the storytelling choices: the “present / hours ago” subtitles the Sci Fi Channel insisted on adding, the clever inversion that gives the present-day scenes the eerie filter usually saved for flashbacks, and the way each character clings to their deepest skill the longest — McKay his science, Sheppard his flying. There’s real heart, too, in checking back in on botanist Katie Brown, whose relationship with Rodney shows how far the character has traveled since his SG-1 days.
Along the way: Major Lorne going rogue on memory-fighting stimulants, Ronon’s ad-libbed one-liner (courtesy of Jason Momoa), Sheppard’s “I’m your boss” Polaroid, and the genuinely strange true story of how Attack of the Show’s Zach Selwyn rapped his way into a guest spot. The panel also weighs the episode’s Gemini nomination and its title’s overlap with a certain Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode.
Feedback this week comes from the show’s recent retrospective, and the panel closes with the usual mix of trivia, tangents, and affection for a series they clearly miss. It’s Stargate Atlantis at its most playful — a memory-loss mystery that remembers to have fun.
