Did the Virgin Mary Invent Chili? (& More Weird Questions)
Podcast: Download
MYS441: Did the Virgin Mary invent chili? A listener heard the story on Tasting History with Max Miller: a 17th-century Spanish nun, Venerable Mary of Ágreda, reportedly bilocated to the Jumano people of New Spain as the Lady in Blue, and the legend says she left them a recipe. On Catholic Answers Live, Jimmy Akin takes that and a stack of other listener Weird Questions from host Cy Kellett, with Dom Bettinelli introducing the episode and reading your feedback.
The bilocation question opens onto bigger ones. What is an apparition of the living, and how do investigators test one? If a nun in Spain spoke with people in New Mexico, was it the gift of tongues, or something else?
Then the questions range widely. What evidence would point to UFOs being the work of cryptoterrestrials or time travelers rather than visitors from another planet? Do animals praise God, and what do Psalm 148 and the Catechism say about it? Are cryptid, UFO and ghost sightings thought forms, the Western cousin of the Tibetan tulpa?
A listener who saw the movie Surrogates asks whether confession, Communion and baptism would work through a remotely controlled flesh-and-blood robot, which leads Jimmy to the question of whether you can confess over the phone. Another asks about remote viewer Lyn Buchanan, who was blindly assigned to view Jesus and said the man turned and looked at him.
From there: can you wear a cowboy hat and boots without owning a horse? How does time work in purgatory, and what did medieval theologians and Pope Benedict XVI propose? Could a vampire cop serve a search warrant on a home he was never invited into? And if dirt is fossilized dinosaurs, what was Adam made from?
The episode closes with feedback on episode 430, Buck Nelson the Ozark Spaceman, covering C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy, why contactees’ aliens are so ordinary, and whether segregation can ever be separated from racism.
