Family Ties (SG1)

SSG256: What happens when Stargate Command lets a notorious con artist through the gate — and gives him an apartment? “Family Ties,” episode 18 of Stargate SG-1‘s final season, answers that question with Fred Willard at full throttle, improvising bingo scams and infomercials for intergalactic “Stardust” while Vala Mal Doran quietly guards a box of trinkets she swore she’d thrown away years ago.

Lisa JonesJeff Haecker, and Victor Lams dig into what works and what doesn’t about this episode’s odd placement near the end of a ten-season run. Jeff and Victor largely agree: it’s not a good episode, but it’s not a hateable one either — and Fred Willard, who rewrote much of his role through improvisation, is impossible to dislike.

The conversation covers the genuine emotional weight of Vala’s story. Her father Jacek arrives at Stargate Command with legitimate intelligence about Arkad‘s remaining cloaked ships, proves himself right — and then immediately proves Vala right too by running bingo schemes on his neighbors and hawking fake Stardust online. The team notes how Daniel Jackson’s conversation with Vala, drawing a parallel between her own transformation and her father’s potential, is one of the episode’s better moments, even if it lands with a touch of guilt-trip energy.

Also discussed: the show’s meta-commentary on its own cancellation, slipped in while the writers still could; the Odyssey‘s new commander and the running gag about bald ship captains; the final appearances of Sergeant Siler and Dr. Lam; Peter DeLuise’s last episode as director; the production design of Jacek’s gloriously garish apartment, toned down from something apparently even more alarming; and the in-show reference to Teal’c attending “The Virginia Dialogues” — a gag that somehow survived network review because, by that point, the network had reportedly stopped watching dailies.

Whether “Family Ties” deserved its reputation as one of Season 10’s weaker entries, and what its placement says about how the series was wrapping up — or failing to — is at the heart of this week’s discussion.
