MYS427: When an EF5 tornado tore Joplin, Missouri nearly in half on May 22, 2011, it killed 158 people in the six minutes it spent crossing the city. In the weeks that followed, something stranger surfaced. Dozens of the city’s children — from different neighborhoods, in families who had never met — began telling their parents and counselors the same story. As the storm bore down, they said, tall, glowing, winged figures stood over them, and they were not afraid. The children called them the butterfly people.

Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli trace how the story moved through a wounded city: from Todd Frankel’s landmark St. Louis Post-Dispatch report, to a school trauma center where therapists heard the same account “across the board,” to a skeptical former newspaper reporter who set out to explain it away and couldn’t. Then they weigh five explanations for what the children of Joplin saw. Were the butterfly people a cryptid species? Real butterflies glimpsed through the distortions of trauma? Disaster folklore that grew in the retelling? Something closer to a near-death experience? Or exactly what the witnesses themselves have always said — guardian angels?

Looking at the case from the twin perspectives of faith and reason, Jimmy Akin explains why the ordinary explanations account for the edges of the story but strain against its convergent core: unrelated children, in separate therapy sessions, describing the same calm, protective, winged figures, sometimes before any adult introduced the idea. He walks through what the Catechism and St. Thomas Aquinas actually teach about guardian angels appearing to children, why an angel sent to comfort a frightened child might take a gentle, butterfly-like form rather than the fearsome shapes of Isaiah and Ezekiel, and how the church’s own criteria for discerning the supernatural line up with what happened in Joplin. It is a mystery about a tornado, a grieving community, and whether heaven leaned close in the worst moment of a city’s life.
