Pre-Sputnik Transients
Podcast: Download
MYS420: Decades before Sputnik, astronomers at Palomar Observatory spent the 1950s building the most detailed photographic map of the sky ever made. When those glass plates were digitized generations later, researchers found something that should not be there: thousands of tiny, star-like flashes that appear on a single exposure and then vanish — points of light that look exactly like sunlight glinting off something metallic in orbit, recorded years before humanity launched a single satellite.
So what was reflecting sunlight from high above the Earth before there was anything up there to reflect it?
Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli take on one of the strangest open questions in current astronomy: the pre-Sputnik transients on the first Palomar Sky Survey. Some of these flashes cluster in tight groups. Some line up in narrow rows. Some appear on the exact dates of famous 1950s UFO events, including the 1952 Washington flap. A team led by astrophysicist Beatriz Villarroel and her VASCO project argues the pattern is hard to dismiss — including a striking deficit of flashes inside the Earth’s shadow, exactly where a sunlight reflection should disappear. A rival team counters that the effects melt away once you account for how the old data were filtered.
Jimmy and Dom walk through all five competing explanations, from dust specks and scan artifacts to nuclear fallout, atmospheric phenomena, and the big one — non-terrestrial technology parked in orbit before the Space Age. Along the way they unpack what a “22-sigma” result actually means, why “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” may be a weaker argument than it sounds, and what the Catholic faith does — and doesn’t — have to say about hunting for alien technology in 70-year-old photographs.
Did astronomers really photograph UFOs orbiting Earth in the 1950s? The honest answer is that the scientists themselves are still arguing about it — and this episode lays out both sides.
