Monarch, S2: Resonance

STV012: A stolen moment, a hidden monster, and a Titan the size of a city block — Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, Episode 2, “Resonance,” keeps two timelines spinning without letting either lose momentum.

Dom BettinelliJeff Haecker, and Patrick Mason work through the second episode of Monarch’s sophomore season, and the verdict is warm: a confident follow-up that balances quiet character beats against real monster spectacle. In 2017Titan X races toward the Strait of Malacca and a collision with civilian shipping, forcing a newly-in-charge Tim to find his footing. He’s spent his career as “the guy in the basement,” and the panel traces his arc from calling Washington for orders to making the hard call himself — pushed, and occasionally bullied, by an older Lee Shaw.

Meanwhile a scarab stows away aboard Outpost 18, and the episode briefly becomes a horror movie: an Alien-style stalk through the corridors, a jump scare, and a grim “clean-up on aisle nine” aftermath. The crew ends up weaponizing the creature’s own infrasonic signal, using infrasound — a real phenomenon the hosts tie back to the Dyatlov Pass mystery — to lure Titan X away from the ships.

Back in 1957, the thread the hosts would happily stay in for the whole hour continues. Keiko and Shaw anchor the stronger half of the episode while Bill Randa splits off to chase a map charting the Titan’s migratory route. Keiko opens up about her past — an arranged marriage, a first husband who died of cancer after Nagasaki, and her refusal to simply be provided for — in the episode’s richest character moment. It all builds toward a village festival that turns out to be an ancient ritual venerating Titan X, and a cliffhanger that erupts straight out of the sea.

Along the way: Cate‘s guilt over Titan X’s escape, and the gap between her father’s guilt-absorbing “super-dad” move and May‘s blunter pep talk; Keiko’s character-defining speech on Monarch’s real mission — Discovery and Defense in a Time of Monsters, with discovery as the best defense; and a lively argument over what the scarabs actually are. A solid Monarch season 2 outing the panel scores a comfortable seven or eight out of ten.
