Monarch, S2: String Theory

STV017: The most gripping thing in this monster show turns out to be two men on a radio. In “String Theory” — Season 2, Episode 7 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+ — an older Lee Shaw picks up a signal from his own younger self, stranded decades earlier in the shifting time of Axis Mundi, and the series finally lands the emotional beat it has been chasing since the pilot.
Dom Bettinelli, Jeff Haecker, and Patrick Mason work through an episode heavy on paradox and light on plot — in the best way. Old Shaw coaches young Shaw into planting a tracker on Titan X, a move the panel dubs the “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” theory of time travel: change the past on purpose so the present can catch up. But if old Shaw is the reason young Shaw is in danger, who’s really writing the story? The scar on Shaw’s cheek says the events happened — so why doesn’t he remember the conversation? The crew traces the show’s slippery, roughly a-day-to-a-year time dilation and compares Monarch’s rift to Stargate’s conveniently timed solar flares.
Meanwhile, Cate and Keiko follow Bill Randa’s old notebooks to an abandoned Japanese village where every grave marker shows a woman tormented by a Titan. Cate climbs into a well that amplifies her strange bond with Titan X — and asks the sharpest question of the hour: is she really sensing the creature, or projecting her own grief onto it? That thread sets up the season’s central fight: is Titan X a world-ending threat or a wounded animal with a thorn in its paw?
Off in Thailand, Isabel — the estranged daughter of Apex’s CEO — recruits Kentaro with a pitch to use Axis Mundi’s time distortion to undo G-Day, while May lands in Tim’s custody and reckons with how far her Apex gambit went wrong. With next week’s episode titled “Separate Ways,” the team is scattering on purpose, and the panel weighs how much of it serves the characters versus the plot.
Threads worth pulling: what Cate and Keiko share that the men don’t, why the well matters, and whether a single tracker is enough to call this a turning point.
