SST421: Gul Dukat has nowhere left to fall. Stripped of his rank and demoted to freighter captain after publicly claiming his half-Bajoran daughter Ziyal, he arrives to escort Kira Nerys to a joint Bajoran-Cardassian conference — one a Klingon attack turns to ash before they arrive. Forced together on a battered freighter with too few crew and not nearly enough weapons, Dukat asks the one person who has every reason to say no to teach him to fight like a terrorist.
What elevates this above its modest plot is the writing in the margins. Dom Bettinelli and Jimmy Akin discuss how Season 4 Kira is noticeably calmer than the hair-trigger version from the early seasons — and how Ziyal’s presence keeps even Dukat’s usual maneuvering in check. The episode’s centerpiece is a Kira-Ziyal conversation that earns every second: two perspectives on Dukat held in perfect dramatic tension — one who sees a murderer when she looks at him, one who can’t. Good versus good, as Jimmy notes, is the pinnacle of drama.
This episode also marks the first appearance of Casey Biggs as Damar, a character the writers already knew they had big plans for. The episode’s screenwriter conceived of the Kira-Dukat pairing as Jews and Nazis forced to cooperate — a frame Dom and Jimmy find heavy-handed. What’s actually on screen is harder to reduce: not space Hitler but, as Jimmy puts it, space Charles Foster Kane. A man of appetites who genuinely wants to be seen as good, who lost everything for his daughter without complaint, and who still, when push comes to shove, always chooses wrong.
They also flag a few soft spots in the script — the Klingons’ improbable decision to ignore Dukat’s attack, and a pivot in Kira’s attitude that needed one more line of justification. Still, the character work is rich, the moral tension is genuine, and Damar’s quiet debut makes it essential DS9 viewing.
