Monarch, S2: Requiem

STV016: “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” pumps the brakes in Season 2, Episode 6, “Requiem,” and lets grief actually land. After Hiroshi Randa’s death closes out the season’s brutal midpoint, the episode splits its runtime between a hushed Buddhist funeral in 2017 and a 1958 flashback that finally explains why Lee Shaw is the man he’s become.
Dom Bettinelli, Jeff Haecker, and Patrick Mason walk through this Monarch season 2 episode 6 breakdown point by point: Kentaro Randa’s fury at Cate Randa, Keiko Miura standing in as chief mourner over Hiroshi’s widow Emiko out of simple seniority, and the funeral’s quiet, family-only staging that says as much about Dr. Suzuki’s isolation as it does about grief.
The flashback half of the episode does the real heavy lifting. A drunken breakfast between young Lee Shaw and his father, full of Cold War-era bravado about having it all, sets up the emotional core of “Requiem”: honor comes at the price of family, and Shaw has been paying that price ever since. The panel traces the line from that 1958 breakfast through G-Day and into 2017, where a harder, colder Shaw vows to destroy Titans rather than study them, flipping Monarch’s founding philosophy on its head and edging closer to the Apex playbook.
That destroy-versus-coexist argument runs through the whole conversation, and this Monarch Legacy of Monsters Requiem recap keeps circling back to it. Keiko’s “they’re living beings more ancient than us” gets flattened by Shaw’s “we’re human beings just trying to survive,” and the hosts point out how directly that echoes Cold War either/or thinking, and how Godzilla himself has always doubled as a stand-in for nuclear weapons.
Elsewhere: Kentaro’s disastrous flirting sets up his first run-in with Isabel Simmons, daughter of Apex’s Walter Simmons; a dream sequence delivers this episode’s Godzilla Tokyo moment before revealing itself as a nightmare; Cate and Keiko’s psychic connection to Titan X gets floated as something rooted in Axis Mundi or Hollow Earth heritage; and the episode ends on a literal cliffhanger, with Lee Shaw’s rift device putting him in radio contact with a version of himself trapped in Axis Mundi.
